We often find ourselves in the incredibly noisy and crowded Times Square area when going to the theater and long for a quiet oasis of decent food. This is it: Dafni Greek Taverna, west of Eighth Avenue on 42nd, across from the Port Authority. A charming little place with classic Greek specialties at a reasonable price–what could be better? You walk into the simple woodsy interior
and though it is busy at this hour, it is not noisy. I loved their mixed appetizers
of hummus, baba ganoush, tabouli and plenty of stuffed grape leaves
while for the main courses, we ordered moussaka,
grilled fish which seems always to be good in Greek restaurants
and of course the classic gyro.
We didn’t have time for the desserts, but I thought I’d just put a few here for us to drool over.
Here’s their baklava
(yelp.com) their traditional walnut cake
(yelp.com)
and Galaktoboureko, which is creamy and rich, just the way I like my desserts.(chowhound.chow.com)
We’ll be back for those another day.
